چکیده

Introduction According to the World Health Organization, at present there are 45 million people blind, worldwide, and 135 million are visually disabled, and depend on family support or care on a daily basis. Annually about 1-2 million people become blind and cataract is a major cause of blindness accounting for more than 50 percent of blindness burden. Prevalence of cataract is higher in developing countries, and in those countries more women than men are blind. In Nepal alone, every year about 60,000 people get cataracts. Although cataract prevalence is higher among women, cataract surgical coverage rate is 1.2-1.7 times lower for them. For example in Nepal, men aged 65-67 years have been found receiving 40 percent more cataract-related services than women in the same age group. In the 75+ age group, men have been found receiving 70 percent more surgery than women[2].

Case-control study of indoor cooking smoke exposure and cataract in Nepal and India.

BACKGROUND The prevalence of cataract is higher in developing countries, and in both developed and developing countries more females than males are blind from cataracts. Three epidemiological studies have associated indoor cooking with solid fuels (e.g. wood or dung) and cataract or blindness. However, associations in these studies may have been caused by unmeasured confounding. METHODS A hos...

Adoption and sustained use of improved cookstoves

The adoption and sustained use of improved cookstoves are critical performance parameters of the cooking system that must be monitored just like the rest of the stove technical requirements to ensure the sustainability of their benefits. No stove program can achieve its goals unless people initially accept the stoves and continue using them on a long-term basis. When a new stove is brought into...

The relationship between NQO1 C609T and CAT C-262T genetic polymorphisms and the risk of age-related cataracts

Cataract is multi-factorial eye disease identified by the disturbance of the transparent ocular lens. There is significant evidence suggesting oxidative damage as a major cause of initiation and progression of numerous diseases including cataracts. NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1; OMIM: 125860) and catalase (CAT, OMIM: 115500) are antioxidant enzymes that prevent cells from oxidative str...
